Pre-Natal & Post Partum Care

Acupuncture is a safe, proven reliable effective treatment for every stage of pregnancy. During the first trimester, acupuncture is one of the safest methods for relieving fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and constipation. If you've conceived after an infertility diagnosis, or if you've experienced a pregnancy loss, news of a successful conception can bring up fears or anxiety.  Several research studies document the beneficial effects of acupuncture during early pregnancy, specifically for miscarriage prevention.

During an acupuncture treatment, the gentle placement of a few hair thin needles on your forearms and legs promotes deep relaxation, especially in your neck and shoulders, and relieves the queasy feeling in your stomach. By the end of the session, you'll notice you're able to take deep, healing calming breaths.  Over the next few days, you will likely be able to eat small meals regularly.  We will offer you some guidance on nutrition and exercise, and refer you to experienced pre-natal yoga instructors, doulas, hypnobirthing trainers, and childbirth educators.  You'll leave the center feeling refreshed, renewed and supported.  More importantly, this balanced harmony of your body, mind and spirit strengthens you as you grow your baby.

During the second and third trimesters, acupuncture treatment helps relieve sciatica or back pain, acid reflux, indigestion, swollen hands, ankles and feet, carpal tunnel pain, insomnia and anxiety.  Even if you're not experiencing any problematic symptoms, regular sessions once a month go a long way toward preparing you and your baby for smooth labor and delivery.

If your midwife or OB tells you that your baby is in breech position or "sunny side up", there are proven protocols to safely encourage the baby to turn.

During your third trimester, pre-birth acupuncture treatments once a week, from week 36, help soften and thin your cervix, so that your baby will drop lower into your pelvis to prepare for birth.  These weekly pre-birth treatments also help you have the emotional and physical strength and focus you need for labor and delivery.  The treatments honor the wisdom of your baby and are not designed to forcefully promote contractions.

After you give birth, acupuncture effectively boosts depleted energies, supports return to hormonal balance, relieves bloating and edema, pelvic, back or leg pain, and helps increase milk supply.  I do make home visits for new mothers who've recently given birth.

If you have any questions about acupuncture during or after pregnancy, please feel free to contact me.  I look forward to talking with you.

"Njemile, the treatment you provided was truly amazing. I have never felt so relaxed and comfortable with my life as when I left your office. I don't think I would've been able to birth my son vaginally without your skilled care and support" --J.P.
